In 1535, Jacques Cartier was the first European to reach the area now we know as Montreal. Jacques entered a village called Hochelaga on the Island of Montreal. He was searching a passage to Asia during the Age of Exploration. In 1605 Samuel de Champlain unsuccessfully tried creating a fur trading post. A mission called Ville Marie was built in the 1642 as a project to create a French colonial empire. Ville Marie became the center for the fur trade and French expansion into New France until 1760, it was eventually surrendered to the British Army. Eventually Bitish immigration expanded the city. In 1860's Montreal's population still continued to grow and Montreal was known as the largest city in British North America. Montreal's population reached one million in the early 1950's. During this time in the 1950's Montreal's harbour was expanded which lead to more skyscrapers built along Museum.
